Machining Titanium: Control the Heat

One of the main challenges is heat. Titanium has relatively low thermal conductivity, so a large portion of the heat generated during cutting stays close to the cutting edge. This can accelerate tool wear if the cutting parameters and cooling strategy are wrong.

Successful machining usually comes down to controlled cutting speed, suitable feed rates, a rigid setup, sharp tooling, and adequate coolant.

There is no single “slow speed, high feed” setting that works for every titanium job. Drilling, for example, should not simply reuse the same parameters as milling.

Welding Titanium: Shield the Hot Metal From Air

Titanium is readily weldable, but hot titanium reacts with oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, which can embrittle the weld and heat-affected zone. High-purity argon is commonly used to keep the weld shielded from the atmosphere.
