Titanium Strip vs. Coil: What Is the Difference?

In metal supply, coil and strip are related terms, but they describe different product forms.

A titanium coil is a continuous length of rolled titanium wound around a core. This format is commonly used for continuous processes such as stamping, roll forming, and tube production.

Titanium strip is usually produced by slitting a wider master coil into a specified width. The final strip may be supplied as individual lengths or in coil form depending on the application.

For purchasing purposes, the distinction matters because strip is usually ordered to a defined slit width and width tolerance rather than simply as a general coil product.

Physical Specifications to Confirm Before Ordering

The key dimensions to confirm are thickness, width, coil weight, inner diameter (ID), and outer diameter (OD).

Coil Width

Coil width depends on both the finished component and the slitting plan. Material closer to the final strip width may reduce scrap and secondary processing.

Coil Weight, ID, and OD

Coil weight affects handling and equipment capacity. ID and OD are equally important because they determine whether the coil can be loaded, stored, and processed on the available equipment.

Thickness and Tolerance

Titanium rolled products are available across a broad range of thicknesses, from thin strip and foil to heavier sheet.

Thickness tolerance can be just as important as nominal thickness, especially when the material feeds into stamping dies, precision forming equipment, welding operations, or assemblies with tight dimensional requirements.

If variation in thickness can change fit, forming behavior, or finished-part consistency, specify the required tolerance when requesting a quotation.

Choosing a Titanium Grade

Titanium coil and strip are generally supplied in CP grades and titanium alloys. Grade selection usually depends on the required balance of formability, corrosion resistance, and mechanical performance.

Processing Titanium Coil and Strip

Coil supply is useful for continuous operations such as slitting, stamping, roll forming, and tube production because the material can feed directly from an uncoiler.

For titanium coil applications, production consistency depends on more than the material grade. HWHG’s production line handles coil sizes from 0.3 mm to 2.0 mm in thickness and up to 1300 mm in width, with processes covering rolling, annealing, surface treatment, and precision straightening.

During fabrication, titanium requires different tooling considerations from carbon steel or stainless steel, particularly because of springback and galling.

Slitting and Edge Condition

Slitting divides a wider master coil into narrower strips using rotary knives.

Burr height, edge shape, and residual stress after slitting can affect both handling and downstream forming. An exposed edge may also require additional finishing.

Common edge options may include:

Slit edge: The edge is left largely as produced by the slitting operation. Some burr may remain depending on the process and tolerance.
Deburred edge: The burr created during slitting is removed, improving handling and suitability for subsequent operations.
Rounded edge: The edge receives additional processing to create a smoother profile. This can be useful where the strip will be handled frequently or where an exposed sharp edge is unacceptable.

Because edge terminology varies between suppliers, specify the required edge condition on the drawing or purchase order.

Stamping and Forming

Two issues deserve particular attention when forming titanium: springback and galling.

Titanium generally has a lower elastic modulus than steel, so a formed part can spring back noticeably after the load is removed. Tooling and bend angles therefore need to account for the expected recovery.

Galling is another concern. Under pressure and sliding contact, titanium can adhere to tooling surfaces, which may damage both the part and the tool.

In practice, successful forming usually depends on controlling bend radius, tooling condition, lubrication, and springback compensation.

These parameters should be validated against the actual grade and component geometry. A forming setup that works for Grade 1 strip should not automatically be assumed to work for Grade 5.

ASTM B265 and Material Certification

For many titanium sheet and strip applications, ASTM B265 / ASME SB-265 is an important material specification.

ASTM B265 defines the chemical and mechanical requirements for titanium and titanium-alloy strip, sheet, and plate.

The purchase order should specify the grade, applicable standard, dimensions, and any critical surface or edge requirements.

Aerospace projects may require AMS specifications or additional customer requirements beyond ASTM B265. ASTM compliance should not be assumed to satisfy an aerospace material specification.

Check the Mill Test Report

When traceability is required, request the Mill Test Report (MTR) or equivalent certification and check the reported heat or lot against the specified chemistry and mechanical properties.

Suppliers may provide quality certificates with each shipment to document material traceability. What to Put on a Titanium Coil or Strip RFQ

A practical RFQ should include:

Grade → standard → thickness → width → tolerances → coil ID/OD → coil weight → edge condition → surface condition → quantity → certification requirements

Tell the supplier what happens to the material after delivery. Deep drawing, tube welding, stamping, and corrosive service can all change the tolerance, surface, edge, or grade requirements.

Confirm these requirements before release of the order. Changes after delivery are usually more costly than adjustments during the quotation stage.
