The titanium supply chain starts not with silver-gray metal, but with titanium-bearing minerals found in rock and mineral sands.

So where are these minerals found, how are they different, and what happens to them after mining?

What Is Titanium Made From?

The main commercial sources of titanium are ilmenite and rutile. Their different compositions affect how much upgrading is required before downstream processing.

Ilmenite (FeTiO₃): The Main Commercial Titanium Ore

Ilmenite is an iron-titanium oxide mineral and the most abundant commercial titanium mineral.

Typically black to steel-gray, it occurs in both hard-rock deposits and heavy mineral sands.

Its relatively high iron content means it usually needs upgrading before further processing. Depending on the production route, ilmenite can be converted into titanium-rich slag or synthetic rutile, both of which have a higher TiO₂ concentration than the original mineral.

Rutile (TiO₂): A Higher-Grade Titanium Mineral

Rutile is a naturally occurring form of titanium dioxide. It is much less abundant than ilmenite, but its high TiO₂ content makes it an important commercial mineral.

Natural rutile concentrates can contain roughly 93–96% TiO₂ (not elemental titanium), depending on deposit and concentrate quality. With less iron and other material to remove, rutile generally requires less upgrading than ilmenite and can serve as a high-grade feedstock for titanium metal and certain pigment processes.

Where Is Titanium Found?

Titanium is widely distributed in the Earth's crust, but commercially useful concentrations are found mainly in hard-rock deposits and heavy mineral sands.

Hard-Rock Deposits

Ilmenite can occur in large igneous rock bodies formed from cooling magma. Where concentrations are commercially viable, these deposits are typically mined by open-pit methods.

The rock is drilled, blasted, crushed, and processed to separate titanium-bearing minerals from the surrounding material.

Heavy Mineral Sands

A large share of the world's titanium minerals also comes from heavy mineral sand deposits.

Heavy mineral sands form as titanium-bearing rocks weather and release mineral grains. Rivers transport the grains downstream, while waves, currents, and wind gradually concentrate the heavier minerals along coastlines and other sedimentary environments.

Because ilmenite and rutile are denser than ordinary quartz sand, they can accumulate in economically useful concentrations. Dark bands in some beach sands may contain ilmenite and rutile alongside other heavy minerals such as zircon and monazite.

Major Titanium-Producing Countries

Titanium mineral production is spread across several regions. Major producers include China, Australia, South Africa, Mozambique, and Canada, although production rankings vary from year to year.

How Is Titanium Extracted from Its Ore?

Titanium is not separated from its ore by simply melting it. After mining, titanium-bearing minerals are concentrated and, where necessary, upgraded to remove unwanted material and increase the TiO₂ content.

Titanium-bearing ore is concentrated and upgraded before entering downstream titanium production.

To produce titanium metal, the upgraded feedstock is converted into titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄). The TiCl₄ is then purified and reduced with magnesium through the Kroll process, producing porous titanium sponge.

Titanium sponge is an intermediate material rather than a finished product. It must still be melted and processed before becoming titanium sheet, plate, coil, bar, or other mill products. What Is Titanium Ore Used For?

Most titanium mineral feedstock goes into one of two product chains: titanium dioxide pigment or titanium metal. The pigment industry accounts for the much larger share, while a smaller portion is processed into metal for aerospace, chemical processing, medical, and other demanding applications.

Titanium Metal

A relatively small share of titanium mineral feedstock is ultimately processed into titanium metal. After the sponge is melted into ingots, the metal can be formed into plate, sheet, bar, tube, billet, and forgings.

These products are used where low weight, corrosion resistance, or high strength-to-weight ratio matters, including aerospace components, chemical-processing equipment, marine applications, and medical implants.

Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) for Pigment Production

A much larger share of titanium mineral feedstock is processed into titanium dioxide pigment than into titanium metal. TiO₂ is valued for its whiteness, opacity, brightness, and UV-related properties.
