A titanium grade rated at 900 MPa tensile strength may look like the better choice than one rated at 345 MPa. But a higher number does not always mean a better fit for the job.

The part may become unusable long before it actually breaks. If permanent deformation puts it out of tolerance, the breaking point is no longer the first number to worry about.

Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS): The maximum tensile stress a material can withstand during a tensile test before fracture.

Yield Strength: The stress at which permanent deformation begins. Beyond this point, the material will not fully return to its original shape after the load is removed.

What Happens Between Yielding and Fracture?

Once titanium is loaded beyond its yield strength, some deformation remains after the load is removed. For a part with tight dimensional tolerances, that may already count as failure even though the material has not fractured.

As the load increases, the specimen eventually reaches its ultimate tensile strength. By then, it has already yielded and may have begun to narrow locally, a process known as necking, before fracture.

The Yield-to-Tensile Ratio

Divide yield strength by UTS and you get the yield-to-tensile ratio. A value closer to 1 leaves less separation between yielding and the maximum tensile stress; a lower value generally leaves more room for plastic deformation.

For a cyclically loaded aerospace part, fatigue performance may matter more than the yield-to-tensile ratio.

Titanium Strength by Grade

The strength range is wide. Grade 1 commercially pure titanium is around 240 MPa UTS in common minimum-property comparisons, while some high-strength titanium alloys can exceed 1,000 MPa.

For strength comparisons, it helps to separate commercially pure (CP) titanium from alloyed grades.

Commercially Pure Titanium: Grades 1–4

From Grade 1 to Grade 4, strength generally goes up and ductility comes down. Oxygen content is one of the main reasons for that shift.

Grade 1 is the softest and easiest to form. It makes sense when the fabrication work demands more ductility than strength.

Grade 2 sits in the middle and is often the practical choice for fabricated chemical and industrial equipment: stronger than Grade 1, but still workable and corrosion resistant.

Grade 4 moves further toward strength. You gain load capacity, but give up some of the formability available with the lower CP grades.

Titanium Alloys: Higher Strength for More Demanding Loads

When higher strength is required, alloyed titanium provides a much wider range of mechanical properties than CP grades. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is a common example, combining substantially higher strength with relatively low density.

Choosing a Titanium Grade Based on Strength

Scenario 1: Chemical Processing Tank

For a welded chemical processing tank, Grade 2 is usually the more sensible starting point. Its tensile strength is modest compared with higher-strength titanium alloys, but maximum strength is not the main requirement here. Corrosion resistance, forming, welding, and fabrication cost carry more weight.

Choosing a higher-strength alloy just for the MPa number can mean paying for strength the tank never needed.

Scenario 2: Aerospace Structural Component

For an aircraft structural part, the design may need more load-carrying capacity without a large weight increase. That is where Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V), with its much higher tensile strength than CP titanium, becomes relevant.

Scenario 3: Medical Implant

Medical implants face repeated loading over a long service life, while the material also has to meet the applicable implant standard.

Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) is commonly used here. Its extra-low-interstitial chemistry provides better ductility and fracture toughness than the standard Ti-6Al-4V grade under relevant conditions.

What Affects Titanium Tensile and Yield Strength?

Tensile and yield values can vary with product form, processing, and material condition, so the datasheet value should match the material being specified.

Temperature

Higher temperatures generally reduce the yield and tensile strength of titanium, but the rate of strength loss depends on the grade. Some titanium alloys are designed for elevated-temperature service and retain useful strength at temperatures where commercially pure grades may not be suitable.

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment can change the strength of some titanium alloys by altering their microstructure. Two parts with the same grade designation may therefore have different mechanical properties if their material condition or heat-treatment history differs.

Processing History

Rolling and annealing can change titanium’s microstructure and, in turn, its strength and ductility. Cold working generally increases strength while reducing ductility, while subsequent annealing can restore ductility and modify the final strength–ductility balance.

This is why the production route matters when comparing titanium with the same grade designation. For titanium coil and sheet produced by HWHG, the process includes controlled rolling on 20-high mills followed by vacuum annealing according to the required material condition.

What to Check Before Specifying Titanium

Start with the failure mode you need to prevent.

If permanent deformation would put the part out of tolerance, start with yield strength. Other service conditions may require different mechanical-property checks.

Before sending an RFQ, specify the titanium grade, product form, applicable ASTM/AMS standard, material condition, dimensions, and required mechanical properties. That gives the supplier a much clearer basis for quoting the correct material.
