Choosing non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NGOES) is not just a matter of picking the lowest loss number on a datasheet. The same grade can behave very differently in a 50 Hz induction motor, an EV traction motor, a servo motor, or a high-speed spindle motor.

The real question is how the motor will run. What speed range will it cover? What electrical frequency will the core see? How much heat can the design handle? Will the motor run at a steady point, or will it keep accelerating, braking, and changing load?

Quick Answer: Screen the Grade by Motor Type First

Frequency is often the first thing to check. A 0.50 mm grade may be practical for a standard 50/60 Hz industrial motor, but it can create too much core loss once the motor moves into traction, inverter-driven, or high-speed operation. In those cases, lamination thickness and high-frequency loss become part of the thermal design, not just material parameters.

Start with the Motor’s Operating Conditions

Before comparing grades, collect the operating conditions first. The grade name only gives a material category. It does not show whether the steel fits the motor’s speed range, working frequency, flux density, thermal limit, or production process.

At the early selection stage, focus on a few basic questions:

What speed and electrical frequency range will the motor operate in?
What flux density and torque level does the design require?
What temperature rise or thermal margin is acceptable?
Will the motor run continuously, intermittently, or under frequent acceleration and braking?
What lamination thickness can be punched, stacked, or processed reliably?

Frequency changes the material choice because it changes the heat load in the core. As speed and electrical frequency rise, the magnetic field reverses more often, and core loss can increase quickly.

That is why 50/60 Hz data is not enough for every motor. A grade that looks fine in a standard induction motor may run too hot in a variable-speed drive, an EV traction motor, or a high-speed spindle motor.

Why Frequency Changes the NGOES Requirement

Frequency matters because it affects how much heat the steel core may generate during operation.

At higher speeds, the magnetic field changes more quickly inside the motor core, and core loss rises with it. This is why a grade that looks acceptable at 50/60 Hz may not perform well in a variable-speed, EV traction, or high-speed motor.

Thinner laminations are often used to control high-frequency loss. At higher frequencies, a 0.20 mm sheet will generally have an advantage over a 0.50 mm sheet. The trade-off is cost and processing. Thinner material is usually less forgiving during punching, stacking, and volume production.

This is why the selection has to move from material data to motor type. A standard induction motor may care more about cost and 50/60 Hz efficiency. A servo motor may need more stable magnetic performance across changing speeds. An EV traction motor or high-speed motor usually puts much more pressure on high-frequency loss and heat control.

NGOES for Induction Motors

For many standard induction motors, the material decision is less about chasing the lowest loss grade and more about finding a workable cost-efficiency balance. In pumps, fans, compressors, appliances, and general industrial equipment, 0.50 mm or 0.65 mm NGOES is often a practical choice for 50/60 Hz designs, especially when the motor has enough thermal margin.

The grade needs a closer look when the motor is expected to meet a higher efficiency class, run for long hours, or operate under inverter control. In those cases, a lower-loss grade may reduce temperature rise and energy use enough to justify the higher material cost.

The risk is rarely that the motor fails right away. It is that a cheaper steel grade saves money at the lamination stage, then gives part of that saving back through higher losses over years of operation. For high-duty motors, NGOES selection should be judged against operating cost as well as material price

NGOES for Servo Motors

Servo motors usually need more consistency from the steel than standard induction motors. In robotics, CNC machines, packaging equipment, and precision positioning systems, the motor may change speed frequently and still needs stable torque response.

For this reason, the NGOES grade should not be judged by one efficiency number alone. Low core loss helps control heat during variable-speed operation, but the material also needs enough permeability at the working flux density. Otherwise, the motor may need more current to produce the same torque.

Basic servo designs may still use a cost-sensitive grade. Compact, high-speed, or continuous-duty servo motors usually need a closer look at loss, permeability, thickness, and batch consistency.

NGOES for EV Traction Motors

EV traction motors are harder on electrical steel than most standard industrial motors. They need strong torque at low speed, good efficiency during normal driving, and controlled heat when the motor moves into higher speed ranges. The motor is not working at one steady point. It keeps moving across a wide speed and load map.

This is why standard 1.5 T / 50 Hz data is only a limited reference. A grade may look efficient in a basic datasheet but still create too much heat when the motor spends time at several hundred hertz or higher.

Thin-gauge NGOES is often checked early in EV motor projects. Grades around 0.20–0.30 mm can help reduce high-frequency loss, but thickness alone does not decide the result. The material still needs suitable permeability, reliable coating insulation, stable thickness control, and enough mechanical strength, especially when rotor laminations are involved.

The lowest price per kilogram is rarely the safest way to judge this application. A higher-performance grade may cost more, but it can reduce heat load, support the cooling design, and help the motor stay closer to its efficiency and power-density targets.

In projects where high-frequency loss becomes the main constraint, amorphous core materials may also be worth comparing. They are not a direct replacement for every NGOES design, but they can be part of the discussion when the motor requires stronger loss control at higher frequencies.

NGOES for High-Speed Motors

High-speed motors are used in spindles, compressors, blowers, and other equipment where the electrical frequency can rise far beyond standard 50/60 Hz operation. In these designs, heat control often becomes the first limit.

The wrong NGOES grade may not fail immediately, but it can push the motor into a difficult thermal range. Extra core loss can reduce continuous power, increase cooling demand, or keep the motor from reaching its intended speed range. If the material is used in rotor laminations, mechanical strength and stability also need closer attention.

Thin laminations are usually preferred because they help control high-frequency loss. Coating insulation, thickness tolerance, and processing behavior still need to be checked, especially if the laminations will be bonded, welded, or handled under pressure.

How to Read an NGOES Datasheet

After narrowing the choice by motor type, check whether the datasheet matches the motor’s real operating range. Grade name, nominal thickness, and one standard core loss value are not enough for final approval.

For standard 50/60 Hz induction motors, core loss, magnetic properties, coating type, processing performance, cost, and availability may be enough for an early comparison.

Servo, EV traction, and high-speed motors need more specific data. Loss values should be checked at the actual frequency and flux density, not only at a standard test point. Thin-gauge availability, coating insulation, thickness tolerance, stack factor, and batch consistency also become more important when the motor runs across wider speed or frequency ranges.

Core loss should be checked together with permeability at the working flux density. If permeability is too weak, the motor may need more current to reach the required torque. Thickness, coating performance, and the actual operating range should be reviewed at the same time.

Questions to Ask Before Confirming the Grade

Before confirming an NGOES grade, ask the steel supplier for data that matches the motor project, not just a standard catalog sheet.

Useful questions include:

Can you provide loss data across our operating frequency range?
What are the loss values at our target flux density?
Are the values measured before or after stress-relief annealing?
What coating type is used, and is it suitable for our stacking, bonding, welding, or interlocking process?
What are the thickness tolerance, width tolerance, and stack factor?
How does the material perform after punching?
What is the typical lead time and batch-to-batch consistency?
Do you have experience with similar motor applications?

For motor manufacturers, NGOES selection is usually not decided by the grade name alone. Loss data, permeability, coating type, thickness tolerance, stack factor, and post-processing performance all affect whether the material fits the motor design and production route.
