Selecting a GOES grade is rarely just a price comparison. A lower-priced material may look attractive at first, but the better question is whether it helps the transformer meet its loss, heat, noise, or accuracy targets without creating new design costs.

Each transformer type stresses the core in a different way. A distribution transformer is usually judged first by no-load loss. A dry-type unit may hit its temperature-rise limit before the loss number looks serious. For CTs and VTs, the question is different again: can the core hold accuracy at low flux?

The grade choice changes once the transformer type changes. Here is how the selection usually starts.

Start with the Core Material Basics

Before choosing a grade name, check the material data that actually affects the transformer design: specific core loss, permeability, thickness, and the test condition behind the numbers.

Core loss affects no-load loss and long-term energy cost. Permeability influences magnetizing current, core size, and magnetic response. Thickness matters because thinner GOES can reduce eddy current loss, especially when the design has stricter efficiency or temperature-rise requirements.

Standards such as IEC 60404 are useful for comparing electrical steel properties, but they do not choose the grade for you. The designer still has to check operating frequency, working flux density, lamination thickness, target loss, and core geometry.

Distribution Transformers: Balance Efficiency and Material Cost

Distribution transformers stay energized for most of their service life, even when the load is low. That makes no-load loss one of the first numbers to check when selecting a GOES grade, especially because transformer no-load loss continues whenever the unit is energized.

For this type of transformer, the grade decision usually comes down to three questions:

What no-load loss target does the design need to meet?
Are there local efficiency rules, utility loss calculations, or buyer loss guarantees?
Will the lower operating loss justify the higher material cost?

M6 can still work in cost-sensitive designs where the loss requirement is loose and the buyer is not heavily penalizing no-load loss. But for many current distribution transformer designs, M4 or Hi-B GOES gives a safer balance between material cost and loss margin.

When the no-load loss margin is tight, 27MOH or another Hi-B grade should be checked before changing the core size or flux density. Some high-efficiency models may also use laser-scribed or domain-refined GOES, but that decision should be checked against the full cost calculation, not only the steel price.

For distribution transformers, the lowest-priced steel grade is not always the most economical choice over the service life. Because no-load loss continues whenever the unit is energized, a lower-priced GOES grade can become expensive if it causes the transformer to miss its loss target or adds too much lifetime energy cost.

A common design trade-off

A distribution transformer built around 0.35 mm M6 may look attractive in the BOM. The problem appears later if the unit cannot meet a stricter no-load loss limit or if the buyer calculates lifetime energized hours into the purchase decision. In that case, moving to 0.27 mm Hi-B GOES is not just a material upgrade. It gives the design enough loss margin to stay inside the required limit.

Power Transformers: Focus on Loss Guarantees and Long-Term Risk

In a large power transformer, a small core-loss difference is not a small issue. Over decades of operation, it affects loss capitalization, buyer guarantees, noise risk, and the manufacturer’s test margin.

For most large power transformer designs, Hi-B GOES grades such as 23MOH or 27MOH are often considered because they offer lower loss and higher permeability than standard GOES. Domain-refined or laser-scribed Hi-B steel is usually reserved for designs where loss penalties, efficiency targets, or buyer guarantees leave little room for error.

For a 500 MVA GSU transformer, the steel premium is rarely the only concern. The expensive problem is a finished unit that misses the guaranteed no-load loss or noise value during factory testing. At that stage, the manufacturer cannot solve the issue by simply explaining that the steel was cheaper.

Dry-Type Transformers: Watch Temperature Rise and Load Conditions

Dry-type transformers are often installed indoors, in commercial buildings, factories, data rooms, and infrastructure projects. Without oil cooling, temperature rise becomes a more visible design limit, and noise may also matter when the unit is close to people or sensitive equipment.

The GOES grade should be checked against the actual load environment.

A thicker, lower-cost grade can be acceptable for a simple load profile. It becomes a risk when the transformer is installed near LED systems, UPS equipment, data-room loads, or variable frequency drives, where nonlinear loads can increase transformer losses and temperature rise needs closer checking.

In dry-type designs with limited thermal margin, 0.27 mm or 0.23 mm GOES is usually checked first because thinner laminations reduce eddy-current loss in the core. High-permeability grades may also help reduce magnetizing current and keep the core design more efficient.

For example, a commercial-building dry-type transformer may pass the basic cost target with a 0.35 mm M6 grade, but testing could show higher-than-expected temperature rise under mixed non-linear loads.

In that case, moving to 0.27 mm M4 or Hi-B GOES can be a practical choice when the core loss is part of the heat problem. It gives the design more room inside the actual ventilation and insulation limits. But if the main issue is winding loss or poor airflow, upgrading the core material alone will not fix the transformer.

Instrument Transformers: Accuracy Comes Before Core Loss

Instrument transformers have a different material priority because CTs and VTs are built to provide accurate signals for metering, monitoring, and protection, not to transfer power.

For this type of core, ordinary core loss is not always the deciding number. The key question is whether the core can hold the required error limit across the specified current or voltage range. That depends on low-flux permeability, linearity, remanence, and saturation behavior. If the core stays magnetized after the signal changes, measurement accuracy can suffer.

GOES is still acceptable for some CT and VT designs when the required accuracy class is not too strict and the error curve stays within the specified range. At that point, a high-nickel alloy is not just a better material. It is insurance against an accuracy problem that costs more than the core material upgrade.

For example, a 0.2S metering CT may first be checked with high-permeability GOES. If the core cannot hold the required error limits across the specified current range, the issue is no longer material cost.

How to Make the Final Grade Choice

Start with the transformer type, then check the actual duty of the core. The same GOES grade can be a good choice in one design and unnecessary or insufficient in another.

For distribution transformers, the first check is usually no-load loss, efficiency requirements, production cost, and expected service life. For power transformers, the decision should include total ownership cost, loss guarantees, noise limits, and long-term reliability. For dry-type transformers, temperature rise, ventilation, load profile, and harmonic-related losses need closer attention. For instrument transformers, accuracy class, low-flux permeability, remanence, and magnetic linearity matter more than ordinary core-loss numbers.
