Once the motor runs, flux keeps moving through the teeth and yoke in changing directions. NGOES fits this condition because its magnetic properties are more balanced across directions. That is why it is still widely used in motor cores, especially where stable torque, heat control, and long running hours matter.

Quick Answer

NGOES suits motor cores because motor flux rotates instead of following one fixed magnetic path. It offers more balanced magnetic performance in different directions, which makes it harder to replace than it may look on paper.

Grade choice depends on the motor. Standard industrial motors may use stable, easy-to-process grades, while high-speed EV motors usually need thinner, lower-loss NGOES with tighter tolerances.

What Motor Engineers Actually Look At

Motor engineers rarely choose NGOES from one value on a datasheet. They begin with the motor’s operating conditions—speed, electrical frequency, flux density, thermal limits, and expected duty—and then consider how those demands differ between the stator and rotor. The two components may face different flux patterns, mechanical stresses, and temperature conditions, so they do not always need the same material priorities.

Manufacturing conditions matter just as much. A low-loss grade may look better on paper, but harder punching, larger burrs, poor flatness, or coating damage can raise scrap, tooling wear, and the real cost of the motor core.

In practice, the selection usually comes down to four questions:

Does the steel provide enough permeability for the required torque?
Is the core loss low enough to control heat?
Can it avoid early saturation under load?
Can it be processed consistently in the lamination line?

You can see the same practical concern in Reddit discussions about motor stator cores, where people are not only asking what material can carry magnetic flux, but also why laminated silicon steel is used instead of a solid steel block.

NGOES vs GOES: Why Motors Need a Different Steel

Comparison of non-oriented and grain-oriented electrical steel magnetic properties for motor and transformer cores

GOES and NGOES are not interchangeable in motor cores.

GOES is useful when flux mainly follows one preferred direction, which is why it is widely used in transformer cores. Motors are different. The magnetic field rotates through the stator, so the steel is magnetized from different directions as the motor runs.

That is where NGOES fits better. Its magnetic properties are more balanced across the sheet, so the core is not relying on one strong magnetic direction. For motor engineers, that usually means a more workable material base for rotating flux, heat control, and stable torque.

Why Rotating Flux Changes the Steel Requirement

In a motor core, the magnetic field does not follow one clean path. It rotates through the stator, which means the steel is magnetized from different directions during operation.

That is why NGOES works well here. Its magnetic properties are more balanced across the sheet, so the core is not forced to rely on one preferred magnetic direction. It will not make the motor loss-free, but it gives engineers a more stable material base to work with.

The real concern is practical: loss, heat, and torque behavior. As speed and frequency rise, a grade that looks acceptable in one condition may become harder to control in a high-speed or inverter-driven motor.

So NGOES is not chosen just because it is “non-oriented.” It is chosen because rotating fields need steel that can respond from more than one direction. The grade still has to match the motor’s loss target, thickness, coating, punching quality, and production process. Nippon Steel’s technical report on non-oriented electrical steel for HEV/EV traction motors also points to the same trade-off.

Core Loss: Why It Becomes a Heat Issue

Core loss matters because it turns into heat inside the motor core. Most of it comes from two sources: hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. Hysteresis loss is related to repeated magnetization. Eddy current loss comes from small induced currents inside the steel.

This is why motor cores use thin, insulated laminations instead of a solid steel block. As frequency rises, lamination thickness becomes more important: thinner sheets restrict eddy-current paths, but they also demand tighter rolling, punching, and stacking control.

So core loss is not just an efficiency number. In real motor applications, it affects heat rise, cooling pressure, insulation life, and whether the motor can stay stable at higher speed or frequency.

Be Careful When Comparing Loss Values

Core loss is usually listed in watts per kilogram, but the test condition matters.

A value measured at 50 Hz does not describe every motor, because flux density, frequency, sheet thickness, and test method all affect the result. These conditions should be checked in the supplier’s electrical steel certificates before two grades are compared. Comparing two grades without checking those conditions can lead to the wrong material choice.

As a rough reference, some standard NGOES grades may be around 4.7 W/kg, while higher-performance grades for demanding motor applications can be below 2.5 W/kg. But that number should start the discussion, not end it.

This is also where HWHG’s core loss-based pricing becomes useful. As a supplier of electrical steel coils, HWHG links the quoted price to verified core loss values rather than only to a broad grade category. For buyers, the trade-off becomes clearer: lower loss may help with heat and efficiency control, but it still has to justify the added material cost and processing difficulty.

Before choosing a grade, engineers should compare the coil properties that affect production, including thickness stability, coating condition, slitting and punching behavior, and batch-to-batch loss consistency.

A small loss improvement is not helpful if it creates unstable production.

How to Choose the Right Electrical Steel for Your Motor Core

NGOES remains widely used because it fits the way motors actually work. The magnetic field rotates, the steel has to respond from different directions, and the core needs thin, insulated laminations that can be processed at industrial scale.

But the right grade still depends on the motor. Speed, frequency, heat limit, lamination thickness, coating, punching quality, and production volume all affect the final choice.

If the grade is wrong, the motor usually shows it later: higher heat, weaker torque margin, lower efficiency, more noise, or less stable long-term operation. A better selection starts from the actual motor condition, not from the lowest number on a datasheet.

HWHG supplies different grades and types of electrical steel coils for motor core applications, with large-scale production equipment and stable quality control. When selecting a grade, buyers can compare options by verified core loss, thickness, coating, processing needs, and delivery stability.

If you are selecting electrical steel for motor cores, the next step is to match the coil grade to your motor’s speed, frequency, loss target, stamping process, and production plan.

FAQs

What is the difference between NGOES and GOES?

NGOES has more balanced magnetic properties in different directions, so it works well in rotating machines. GOES is optimized for one main magnetic direction, which makes it better suited to transformers.

Why does lamination thickness matter?

Thinner laminations reduce eddy current loss, especially at higher frequencies. The trade-off is processing difficulty. Thin sheets are harder to punch, coat, and stack cleanly.

What does silicon do in motor steel?

Silicon increases electrical resistivity and helps reduce eddy current loss. It can also improve magnetic performance. Too much silicon can make the steel harder and more brittle, so the material still has to remain workable.

How should engineers choose an NGOES grade?

Start with the motor application. Check speed, frequency, flux density, thermal target, lamination thickness, coating, and punching process. Then compare grades under the same test conditions.

Is the lowest-loss grade always the best option?

No. It depends on the motor. EV traction motors and high-speed motors often need lower-loss grades. Standard industrial motors may benefit more from stable processing, lower scrap, and reliable supply.
